Government to close 36 of Remploy’s 54 factories

The Government announced that it intends to close the majority of Remploy factories, putting more than 1700 people out of work including 1,518 workers with disabilities. Full details are available on the GMB site at www.gmb.org.uk/newsroom/latest_news/gmb_slam_remploy_closures.aspx  Both GMB and Unite (the two unions who have members in Remploy) have condemned the savage decision and are consulting with members to set out a plan of action.

The Sentinel featured an article on the Trentham Lakes factory and the effect the closure will have on the disabled workers who face losing their jobs. The North Staffs Trades Council will fully support the local Remploy workers in any protests, stalls or leafleting that are organised and we will update this blog when we know more details.
