NEW MINISTERIAL STATEMENT ON FUTURE OF REMPLOY – TRADE UNION RESPONSE

There is to be a demonstration by Remploy workers in Manchester tomorrow against the closure of 36 factories and the loss of 1,752 jobs

GMB and Unite commented on a new ministerial statement on Remploy.

Phil Davies GMB National Officer for Remploy said “It has been brought to our attention that the Minster for the Disabled will make today a statement on Remploy. Maria Miller MP will announce that successful bidders for Remploy factories will receive a £6,400 subsidy spread over three years. See statement attached circulating in the factories

Any successful bidder will receive £4,800 in the first year, £1000 in the second year reducing to £600 in third year. The Trade Unions recognise this as a breakthrough but would urge all our supporters and MPs to look at this announcement cautiously. This could invite asset strippers into the bidding process.

Trade Unions want guarantee under the TUPE regulations and because of the complexity of the Consultations we formally asked for an extension to 90 days period.

We further call on the Government to honour commitments given on the funding and reinstate the funding until at least April 2013”

This new announcement follows the Ministerial statement on 7th March the House of Commons which announced the decision to close 36 of the 54 remaining Remploy sites with compulsory redundancy for 1,752 people of whom 1,518 of these are disabled. The statement envisages the complete closure of all 54 factories in due course.

The Remploy factories scheduled to close in the first wave are as follows: Aberdare, Aberdeen, Abertillery, Acton, Ashington, Barking, Barrow, Birkenhead, Bolton, Bridgend, Bristol, Chesterfield, Cleator Moor, Croespenmaen, Edinburgh, Gateshead, Leeds, Leicester, Manchester, Merthyr Tydfil, Motherwell, Newcastle, North London, North Staffs, Oldham, Penzance, Pontefract, Poole, Preston, Southampton, Spennymoor, Springburn, Swansea, Wigan, Worksop and Wrexham.
